Bauhaus Nowhaus

2019 was the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus. German Furniture makers Tecta invited artists to design reinterpretations of classic Bauhaus furniture. I designed embroidery based on the Bauhaus manifesto, written in 1919. I redacted the text, leaving ‘art’, ‘craft’ and ‘Bauhaus’, and marked all the punctuation. I embroidered 18 chairs in total, each with its own colour palette.

Tecta made up the chairs beautifully, and hosted an exhibition featuring all the artists interpretations. It was a joy to work on this project. most of the chairs have gone off to private collections, or Bauhaus exhibitions elsewhere.

I really like the back of the embroiderers, with the ends untrimmed and knots in tact.
