Overalls for Alice.
Sometime last year I worked with Alice Vincent on remaking her Grandfathers overalls. She wanted them to fit, to work for her, to be worn over layers, to be unpeeled after a day working in the garden. I unpicked them, cut them down to size, added pockets, moved pockets and stitched everything back together. I finished them off by hand sewing all the buttons back on, and I added her initials to the breast pocket.
I focused on workwear for the final year of my degree. Embroidery was fussy, I craved hardwearing fabrics, things to be worn on repeat, garments that become part of the person. Alice wrote about the appeal of workwear for the Telegraph style magazine. She was photographed wearing the overalls I reconstructed, and wrote so beautifully about the project. I love knowing my clothing will be worn and loved, and it was lovely to see my work in print.
