Quilted Coats

I made the first quilted coat when Gene was three months old. Quilted with a wide body and grown on sleeves. It was inspired by Japanese workwear, simple shapes. The fabric was leftover from previous projects, a floral cotton lawn and striped Japanese cotton. Bound in pink it was sweet and simple and allowed for movement. The width allowed for it to be worn for four months.

I made a second coat. I used leftover green corduroy and a striped seersucker. I bound the edges in lilac, and Gene was once again snug for winter.

Adults started commenting on the coat. I made an adult size sample, black corduroy and a black suiting wool bought very cheaply in a sale. With one giant pocket it has become part of my everyday wardrobe, Gene and I in matching quilts.

A friend got in touch, she wanted one for her sister for Christmas. We worked together, she Lino printed squiggly people on the pink side. We quilted it together with rainbow thread and I bound the edges in red. I received a photo on Christmas Day. It was being worn, accessorised with a big smile and a tinsel crown.

I love seeing people wear my clothes. Seeing them everyday, not stored away as precious objects, but worn and washed and worn and washed again.
